Tobacco Caye is a tiny island off the coast of Belize, popular with budget travelers. Hammocks, novels, group meals, beach volleyball and a healthy dose of snorkeling are likely to fill your day, on one of the few islands that won't break the bank in a country that normally excels at doing so.
Dolphin's, manta rays and manatees are commonly sighted. I saw 4 dolphins off the coast and while snorkling an eagleray and a stingray. I missed the octopus that had attached itself to a fishing boat's nets the night before. There were also barracudas around the reef and an osprey called one of the huts home.
The island is extremely small and to be honest if you get bored with a lack of choice 2 nights is plenty. People tend to eat in their hotels due to the size. It's a great place to just chill and enjoy the sun and sea but not much else. I played volleyball with the workers on the island every evening around 6pm. Even in just 3 days you'll get to know everyone on the island.
The distance from Belize City keeps people away who prefer Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. This is a great options for people on a low-moderate budget looking to do nothing.
Tobacco Caye
The island is believed to have been named for the early cultivation of tobacco there.
